I have no idea how this came across my radar this morning and I need to share it.
Did you know that they have created a GMO corn seed that causes infertility? Yep. They call it “contraceptive corn”. If this seems too strange to be true, then check a patent filed by the Baylor School of Medicine. It claims that it works on both males and females.
The medical dictionary has a definition for us: Corn that has been genetically modified to produce antibodies that destroy sperm.
“The pregnancy prevention plants are the handiwork of the San Diego biotechnology company Epicyte, where researchers have discovered a rare class of human antibodies that attack sperm.
By isolating the genes that regulate the manufacture of these antibodies, and by putting them in corn plants, the company has created tiny horticultural factories that make contraceptives.
'We have a hothouse filled with corn plants that make anti-sperm antibodies,' said Epicyte president Mitch Hein.” - from The Guardian, 9/09/2001
Definitely mad science and eugenics science gone bad. Perhaps that is why Mexico is poised to ban all GMO corn imports from the U.S.
It looks like Epicyte got a $100,000 grant from NIH to develop “antibodies for reproductive health applications”.
The tricky thing for the average grocery shopper is that they don’t have to label corn “contraceptive corn”. GMO corn is used in high fructose corn syrup, corn flakes, and God knows what else. You don’t know if you have consumed this Frankencorn and apparently the infertility is irreversible.
What in the world? Monsanto and Dupont commercialized the epicyte gene and we have no idea what products it is in today. If a packaged or processed food has the label “organic” it could still have up to 30% GMO ingredients.
Do your best to grow your own food or get it from a local organic farmer. Avoid soy, corn, oats, aspartame (duh), canola oil, sugar beets, cottonseed oil and dairy products with growth hormones. I also do my best to avoid all processed and packaged food. Learn more about food safety here.
I found it difficult to find information on the Epicyte gene and it’s current usage. Remember, no labeling is required. If you have more information, please share in the comments. Nobody should become sterile from eating corn flakes or drinking a soda.
